AT SOME POINT WE NEED TO LOOK AT WHAT IT IS THAT MATTERS TO US.... NOT WHAT IS THE MATTER.
![]() Part of my role as a health promoter involves working independently in the community as an exercise provider. Working alone is not my preferred choice, as working collectively is far more productive for everybody, but in small towns like Whanganui that's often difficult to achieve. However, I get around this issue by belonging to a national registered body of exercise professionals, it's a good way to connect with other like minds, and we are able to support and encourage each other with the bigger picture in mind. My REPS (Registered Exercise Professional) validation not only helps re-inforce my own confidence levels, but I hope instils confidence in my clients and potential clients as well. It also means that I recognise and I am committed to keep learning and developing in my trade - Im in it for the long hall!. Im well aware that how I deliver my service can affect the health and quality of lives, and it's a responsibility that I take seriously. I love my group fitness, and it shall be an incredibly traumatic day when or if I ever have to give it up. I have been teaching it for about 20 years and group exercise forms part of my life's tapestry now. I started in the King Country, working closely with Sport Waikato, who were very community service driven at that time and I couldnt have asked for better mentors back then. The life coaching is another arm to my community services. I have always been interested in human behaviour, but it all came to a head after the birth of my first child and I found I was driven to explore this area more. I consequently studied narrative counselling skills and rehabilitation, which I knew would dove tail nicely with my fitness quals. For many years I've intrinsically been aware that my body and mind work together somehow, and the older I have got the more interested I am to learn about that connection by way of sourcing the theory behind it rather than just relying on my instincts. How excited I was when I discovered that the Te Whare Tapa Wha model of health is now recognised in our front and secondary health services. Whilst it may or may not be largely practised to it's fullest understanding, it is a positive start in recognition of the 4 pillars of health largely connected to well being. (Physical, emotional, spiritual, psychological) Other cultures recognise these 4 pillars, it seems to be western attitudes which are lagging behind. However I have no doubt that western medicine will eventually catch up as more and more evidence comes out in the neuro science field about how our thoughts impact on our cells. Once this information ripples down and becomes accepted, we can then catch up to what ancient civilisations have instinctively known for centuries. I suspect by the time that happens I shall be long gone from this planet, but hopefully the next generation will benefit with more information which should theoretically bring a better quality of life for all.
