AT SOME POINT WE NEED TO LOOK AT WHAT IT IS THAT MATTERS TO US.... NOT WHAT IS THE MATTER.
Recently my 11 year old daughter had her ears pierced. Having had them done once before she had a clear memory of what to expect. Although she was very excited at the thought of her ear lobes adorned with sparkles once more, she was also numbed by the memory of the shots of pain that came with the territory. What was going to win out was a choice she was going to have to make. What she was exhibiting was an example of what we all do when we feel discomfort about something. Sometimes memories are conscious mostly due to how recent the memory, but often they are so historical they lay buried deep in our subconscious bringing difficulty of understanding. Whilst I think at times it can be important to know of their origin , Im not convinced we need to re-remember everything in intricate detail in order to move forward. I believe it is how we manage our stress that is important rather than spending exhaustive amounts of energy on it's source. My daughter did get her ears re-pierced but it did require a little coaching from mum. What I asked her to do was every time she remembered the pain, (because I understand that it did hurt and her experience can not be denied), I asked her to go into a counter attack with the thought of how pretty the end result was going to be. In other words she had to go into battle with her own mind if she wanted the bling!... She minimised the fear and maximised her goal and now her memory of the pain is now reduced by the memory of the accomplishment that she achieved. No longer is this type of strategy considered new age jargon, as modern technology can now track our thoughts along neural pathways. What science can now tell us is that what we focus on has a big impact on our lives and confirms this with evidence of the effects of our thoughts on a cellular level. Or in other words our thoughts affect our physical health and our physical health affects our mental health etc etc. At last we are catching up to what some cultures have known for centuries. We are more than just one dimensional and are an interconnected matrix where nothing works in isolation of itself and that includes the workings of the brain as well. “Right brain left brain”; “only using 10% of our brains” are myths. We use most of our brain all of the time with every thought we make. What we don't use is our brain's capabilities or it's potential. Scientific leaders like Dr Jo Dispenza (How to evolve your brain), and Dr Kerry Spackman ( The Winners Bible) are two great examples of neuroscientists who through their published books teach us how we can take more control of our health and well being using the amazing power house we have between our ears. But information alone is nothing if we don't apply it. I believe that the future of our health care will involve some basic neuroscience priniciples that everybody will be able to understand and use in a very practical way with the results being a healthier and more empowered society.

There's certain moments that happen in life that are game changers. I had one a few weekends ago when I met one of my heroes, a successful author and soon to be a Hollywood movie maker. This man had already changed my life with his successful book, but continued to change it again after accepting my invitation to meet for coffee on a recent trip to Auckland. Like a lot of other Kiwi's I have spent many years exposed to nonchalance, so it was incredibly refreshing to be considered interesting enough to have coffee with! I am so relieved that I learnt the skills needed to help deflect those who try and shatter dreams and ideals, less I wouldn't have had this amazing encounter. His area of expertise is in neuroscience, in the sense of human and brain development and our personal potential. He teaches people how to re-wire the brain for desired changes, of which I am one. He taught me that what I realistically want to achieve, I can. (I can now add meeting him to that list). He taught me that my emotions whilst are valid, are often not the whole truth. In fact some can be quite distorted despite how real they feel! I learnt that it was my perception that I made real and his book taught me how and why. For so many years I didn't bother to get to know what needs are relevent in the current sense rather than what may have been relevent in the past. He taught me how to find my strengths and build on them and at the same time how to turn my weaknesses into opportunities to learn from, rather than be limited by. I was also reminded that we can't change others and if I want something different in my life then it is me that can change that. He helped me finally accept that change is guaranteed no matter what, so it was best I started working with it rather than try and dodge it!. I have also come to learn that often change can bring great opportunities for learning and development if I stay open to looking for hope. Mostly though he taught me something which exceeds all else, he taught me that I have far more control in my life than I was lead to believe, and with choices there is great freedom. His gift to me I now endeavour to pass on to my own clients, who in turn I believe will pass on to others, and if we all take one little step forward with our own personal development then that is how we can change the world!.
